1970s Fashion: Dawn of Disco Fever

The dawn of 1970s fashion began as a continuation of the 1960s with bell-bottom pants, crop tops and peasant blouses still being very trendy.

In the early 1970s, women who enjoyed the mini skirt now also had the choice of wearing midis, which fell at about mid calf in length or the maxi, an ankle length skirt or dress. Men began wearing ties that were even wider than in previous years, and their shirts grew more colorful, as well. Both genders also enjoyed platform shoes and fitted blazers.

Characteristics of 1970s Fashion

Many men began to wear three-piece suits, complete with wide collared shirts, during the 1970s. These were available in a wide variety of colors and often included flared trousers as well. In more casual situations, men would also wear their suits sans their ties or using only the jacket and vest. Women wore bold and geometrically patterned midi dresses or skirts with hemlines that reached to the mid calf, or maxis, whose hemlines brushed the ankle. 1977 Halston and Models

In more casual situations, both women and men wore platform shoes, as well as fitted blazer jackets made of wool, leather, suede, or other materials. Bell-bottom trousers were also a mainstay of the early 1970s fashion scene. Crop tops for women continued to be popular as well.

By the middle of the 1970s, however, bell-bottom trousers were replaced with high-waisted and flare legged denim jeans or satin trousers. Toward the middle and end of the decade, iron-on decal shirts and baseball jerseys became popular as well.

Major influences of 1970s Fashion

Glam and punk rockers, such as David Bowie and Roxy Music, helped to usher in the glam and punk rock fashions seen in the 1970s. Torn leather jackets, ripped jeans and torn t-shirts were all the rage during this period of time. Beatle boots with pointy toes or tennis shoes that were filthy were the preferred footwear of these punk rockers.

Disco dancing became a popular past time for both women and men. Another very influential person who had a profound effect on fashion, particularly men's fashions, is John Travolta. With the release of the movie, "Saturday Night Fever," the stylish white suit, without the shirt, had become what the trendy man wore. These suits featured wide lapels and collars, as well as flared legs. One piece bathing suits for women, known as mallots, were introduced during the 1970s too.

Just as fashion was hugely influenced by music in the 1960s, this continued into the 1970s. With both punk rock and disco skyrocketing in popularity, the fashions of the 1970s followed the more popular musicians of the decade. Punk had a sort of poverty stricken and angry message while disco was all about having a good time.
