Kilted Loafer

Plain Loafers

Plain Loafers: As we've state before, every man should have a few pair of loafers in his closet, amoung them, a pair of plain loafers which are key in any wardrobe. They are exactly what the name implies: classically styled slip-on shoes that have timeless elegance and simplicity. They are easily recognizable by their lack of fussiness – plain toes, a minimum of visible stitching, unobtrusive heels and no fancy flourishes. With no laces, Velcro, buckles or other fiddly clasps, they are also the speedy solution when dressing!

A byword for comfort and versatility, as well as classic design, a well-chosen pair will take you almost anywhere, and will go perfectly with most outfits, other than formal dress. Along with lace-ups, cut below the ankle, loafers belong to the category called "dress shoes". That may sound formal, but in fact it usefully distinguishes mens dress shoes like loafers and Oxfords from their cousins, like sneakers, athletic shoes and ankle boots.

With a suit, loafers that are plain contribute to a smart but relaxed image, ideal for everyday at the workplace. They also go well with more informal trousers, chinos or even jeans, adding that touch of style that characterises the smart casual look you might want to achieve for a party or a night out with friends.

These loafers may be plain, but that doesn't mean you don't have plenty of choice. Within the wide range of loafers available you will be able to choose from styles that are dressier or more casual. You will of course have a range of colors to choose from, as well as materials. A rule of thumb is that the shinier the leather, the dressier the shoes will look. For a more casual look, suede is always a good choice – and it doesn't need buffing and polishing.

A good plain pair of loafers should be a staple in any mans wardrobe and a well-made pair is a good investment. If properly looked after, a smart purchase should serve you well for years to come. If you're looking for the ultimate elegant pair, you will find that most of the top designers recognize the vital role that these classic dress shoes play in the modern man’s wardrobe.

If you're not looking for designer shoes by Ferragamo or other legends in the world of stylish footwear, you will find the plain loafer in most shoemakers' ranges. The best and most durable ones have a leather sole, though you will also find rubber soles used as an alternative. These loafers rely on cut and line, rather than ornamentation and detail. Its always worth seeking out a pair made by a respected name in the design world and buying the best that you can afford within the limits of your style budget.
